15 Best Party Cities in America for Nightlife Lovers

The United States has one of the most diverse nightlife scenes in the world, but how does one even begin to lay out the nightlife in America? City by city, I suppose.

America nightlife does not hold back, from the techno clubs of New York City and the queer bars of San Francisco to never-ending nights in Miami and live music in New Orleans. Hedonist playgrounds like Las Vegas and Atlantic City provide endless resorts, casinos, and nightclubs for those willing to flash cash.

Get ready to get wild in these 15 best party cities in America for nightlife lovers.

1. Miami

Bienvenido a Miami, one of the best nightlife cities in the U.S., where North America and Latin America meet in a retrofuturistic city of neon-soaked nightclubs, endless beaches, and luxury parties.

South Beach nightclubs offer the postcard Miami party experience, while clubs like Club Space and Blume bring crowds flocking to Downtown and Brickell. Miami is one of the best cities for American nightlife because parties continue well into the night — and sometimes into the next morning.

2. Nashville

Music City, the Country Music Capital, Nashvegas…whatever you want to call it, Nashville is a unique place to party in America. It caters to country music fans, college social club formals, bachelorette parties, and so much more with a twang you won’t find elsewhere.

Nashville’s party culture centers on The District, a riverfront neighborhood of live music bars, and honky tonks.

Start your bar hop down Broadway Avenue at the rooftop FGL House, but don’t be afraid to branch off from this thoroughfare. For something different, head to Germantown for clubs like Back Corner.

3. Washington, D.C.

A bartender creates a citrus flavored alcoholic beverage and adds a straw as the final touch.

In Washington, D.C., America nightlife takes off, from the cocktail lounges of Georgetown and the dives of U Street to the gay bars of Dupont Circle and the 14th Street corridor of Logan Circle.

The trite political refrain of wanting a “president you can have a beer with” rings true in the capital, where dive bars and breweries above, like the historic Hawk ‘N’ Dove in Capitol Hill.

But the party’s just getting started. Late-night dance haunts included 9:30 Club, a music venue that sometimes hosts themed dance parties, and Club Timehri, where Caribbean rhythms heat up the D.C. nightlife scene.

4. Atlanta

Atlanta’s neighborhoods sprawl across its vast boundaries, connected by highways and limited public transit. The best neighborhoods for nightlife include Decatur, Buckhead, and East Atlanta Village.

As the birthplace of trap music, it’s no surprise Atlanta has some great venues for listening to trap’s signature 808 beats and more. Popping nightclubs to catch some Atlanta beats include MJQ Concourse, Tongue and Groove, and events thrown by Define Everything Future.

5. Las Vegas

I have half a mind to say “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” and no more. Everyone knows Las Vegas is the hedonism capital of the world — what more could I possibly say?

Along the Strip, you’ll find some of the best nightclubs in America, such as Omnia, XS, Marquee, and Hakkasan.

There are options off-Strip, too — rock and blues live music bar The Sand Dollar Lounge has been grooving since the mid-1970s, and the East Fremont area can offer more lowkey, low(er)-cost nightlife alternatives.

6. Chicago

As the nation’s third-largest city, Chicago is one of the best places for nightlife in America. The scenes change from neighborhood to neighborhood, offering something for any reveler.

Looking to barhop before a Cubs game? Head to Wrigleyville. Want a historic neighborhood full of pubs and taverns? Old Town is your place. Neighborhoods like Lake View and Logan Square have wide ranges of bars — just go exploring.

You can’t talk about nightlife in Chicago without talking about house music, which emerged from the underground queer, Black, and Latino club culture in the 1980s.

Don’t miss smartbar, a premier nightclub in America for house music. Sound-Bar in River North offers an upscale twist on the DJ scene, while patrons dance until they drop at Hydrate Nightclub in Boystown.

7. New Orleans

Pubs and bars with neon lights in the French Quarter, New Orleans USA

New Orleans has all the ingredients for great America nightlife — year-round good weather, a rich music history, no closing time, and no open-container laws.

A stroll down Bourbon Street alone is enough to convince you NOLA is one of the best party cities in America. Outside the French Quarter, Bywater offers a more laidback style to the Crescent City party scene at bars like Bacchanal Wine.

Don’t miss the live music joints, such as The Spotted Cat, that open their doors on Frenchmen Street for a taste of authentic New Orleans tunes, from jazz and blues to reggae.

8. Los Angeles

The eternal sunshine in Los Angeles doesn’t make the city any less of a capital of America nightlife.

From gay nightclubs of West Hollywood like The Abbey to Downtown cocktail bars like the rooftop Broken Shaker and The Varnish speakeasy. Don’t miss the cocktails and high-quality bar food at Koreatown staple Lock and Key.

Joints in seaside neighborhoods like Long Beach and Santa Monica bring a laidback atmosphere hard to find in the city’s dense urban core.

9. Austin

Live music bar

Austin’s reputation as the live music capital of the world is well-earned, something you can get a taste of just about anywhere in the Red River Cultural District.

Outside of Red River, you can find artists playing everything from rock and blues at The Continental Club in South River City. The neighborhoods in and around downtown boast queer bars like Barbarella, while Body Rock ATX curates the hottest dance parties in the city.

Locals will tell you there’s more to this party city in America than the sloppy bar-hopping along Rainey and Sixth streets. However, don’t write off watering holes on East Sixth such as Lazarus and Yellow Jacket Social Club.

10. Denver

Denver’s nightlife is one defined by friends for craft beer and live music at breweries and brewpubs in neighborhoods like River North or Five Points.

Sip into the science of Cerebral Brewing, pucker up with an Odell Brewing Co. sour, or try my favorite Belgian white at Blue Moon Brewing Company (I’ve never been to the brewery itself, so grab a Blue Moon for me).

Beyond drinking, the Mile High City is a great place to get stoned, with many dozens of marijuana dispensaries.

11. San Francisco

San Francisco Downtown - North Beach at Night

San Francisco has more bars per capita than any other city in the U.S., making it one of the best party cities in America. Nightclubs cluster in the SoMa warehouse district, while Mission District’s nightlife crosses between Valencia and Mission streets.

The Castro has a plethora of dive bars, nightclubs, and social spaces. Jolene’s Bar provides a space for all queer folk in a nightlife culture dominated by cis gay men, with the weekly, inclusive UHAUL party for girls who love girls.

12. Houston

Megan Thee Stallion, hip-hop sweetheart and Houston native, said it best — “I know you wanna come and kick it out in Houston. B***h, I’m from Texas.”

Hot Girl Meg does not lie. Houston is one of the best nightlife cities in the U.S and you do wanna kick it there. From sleek dance clubs like Paradise Palace to queer club South Beach and anime-themed Zenaku, there’s no shortage of unique atmospheres.

In addition to nightclubs, Houston also has more lowkey haunts. Find skyline views and eclectic bars like Poison Girl in Montrose or biergartens and whiskey bars like Permission in The Heights.

13. Atlantic City

View of hotels and rides along the boardwalk at night from the fishing pier in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Known as the Vegas of the East, Atlantic City is one of the best places to party in America’s eastern seaboard. The skyline glitters with resorts, casinos, and nightclubs, and the boardwalk stretches along four miles of white sand beaches.

Boogie Nights is the staple club for Atlantic City nightlife with music from across the eras. For something different, dive into the water at The Pool After Dark, whose name tells you all you need to know.

14. San Diego

San Diego Nightlife

Party season never ends in San Diego, whose warm, stable climate keeps people flocking to the beaches and bars year-round.

Nightlife anchors along Fourth and Fifth Street in Gaslamp Quarter, with swanky bars like Ginger’s and The Tipsy Crow, and in the laidback breweries of North Park’s 30th Street.

But San Diego’s a beach town, so head to Pacific Beach for seaside sipping at JRDN or with a cocktail at Open Bar. Don’t miss Bang Bang in Gaslamp Quarter, a sushi bar/nightclub fusion with eclectic house music and a Ryan Gosling-themed bathroom.

15. New York City

New York City - amazing sunset over manhattan with Queensboro bridge

Is it any surprise that New York City is the best party city in America? While critics might reasonably say it’s expensive and oversaturated, the city that never sleeps truly has something for everyone.

The Big Apple is an epicenter of pride, but gay nightlife in New York City isn’t limited to the West Village — Black-owned Lambda Lounge provides a cozy lounge for queer people of color in Harlem. C’Mon Everybody in Bed-Stuy brings the queer community with delicious cocktails and art shows.

Admire the concrete jungle from up high at Mr. Purple in the Lower East Side or settle down in the Upper West Side or sip wine at the sleek, classic Midtown wine bar Aldo Sohm. Across the East River, techno parties abound at spots like the psychedelic Avant Gardner in Williamsburg and Berlin-esque Basement in Maspeth.

Conclusion

From sea to shining sea and all the places in between, it’s a party in the U.S.A. The country’s vastness and diversity contribute to one of the most varied and iconic nightlife scenes in the world and oh does America have range.
