Can You Bring Hair Straightener on a Plane? Here’s the Answer

Despite what the name implies, hair straighteners don’t just straighten hair. Their supreme versatility is their biggest selling point—with just one device, you can go from curly to straight in no time.

For this reason, it’s always handy to carry a trusty pair in your beauty arsenal while you’re on vacation. You always want to look your best, after all!

This brings us to today’s question: can you bring a hair straightener on the plane? Or will you have to sacrifice your hairstyle in fear of it being confiscated?

Can you bring a hair straightener on a plane?

Luckily, yes, you can bring a hair straightener in your carry-on bag and your checked bag. So, if you used your hair straightener just before the flight, make sure to wrap it around a washcloth or small hand towel to prevent burns and other accidents.

Within the US, hair straighteners and several other styling tools are universally allowed on planes. However, please be advised that this rule only applies to regular hair straighteners.

Since butane-fueled hair straighteners are fire hazards, they’re allowed in carry-on bags only. Moreover, the hair straightener must come with a security cover to prevent accidental activation.

Spare cartridges and gas refills aren’t allowed in either carry-on or checked bags, so make sure the cartridge is full if you’re planning to use it constantly while abroad.

What about other hair styling tools?

Alongside corded hair straighteners, you can bring curling irons, flat irons, and hairdryers in your carry-on bag and checked-in bag.

However, you can’t pack gas-powered hair equipment in your checked bag as they might explode. The same is said for hair styling tools that run on lithium-ion batteries.

You’re allowed to bring gas-powered hair tools in your carry-on bag but you’re limited to only one item per passenger, as opposed to unlimited items for corded equipment.

Considerations when packing a hair straightener

When packing a hair straightener, beware of international power supply voltages.

Make sure to bring outlet adapters and transformer packs to regulate the voltage. In Europe, the 220 to 240 volts power supply isn’t compatible with most US styling tools, so make sure you don’t immediately plug in your hair straightener lest it fries.

If possible, buy a travel-friendly hair straightened that accepts a dual voltage of 110 to 220 volts.

Also, it’s worth checking the flight regulations of the country you’re visiting. Although hair straighteners are allowed in US planes, travel standards are far from international. You certainly don’t want your hair straightener confiscated during check-in or screening!

To sum up…

Fortunately, you’re allowed to bring a hair straightener in your carry-on bag and your checked bag. However, this only applies to corded hair straighteners.

Butane-fueled hair straighteners and cordless hair straighteners (powered by lithium-ion batteries) are only allowed in your carry-on bag. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask the check-in clerk at the airport information desk so they can confirm what you can and can’t pack in your checked bag.
