Packing is one of the things that equally excites and stresses me when traveling. Choosing clothes that go well with my itinerary, making sure I don’t go above your baggage allowance, knowing what I can and can’t bring… all these things give me (unnecessary, I admit) stress.
The many rules and regulations of airports and airlines can be confusing for many of us. And one of the most common questions we have is whether or not they can take aerosol products on board. It’s a valid concern, especially since we rely on so many aerosol-packed items daily. From deodorant to hairspray, these products can be essential to our routines.
If you’ve also asked yourself, “Can I bring aerosols on a plane?”, you’re not alone. I did too! Having had my fair share of air travel, I know that understanding the regulations is one of the most important things you must do before you start your journey. Are aerosols allowed on planes?

Most aerosols, like hairspray, deodorant, and shaving cream, are allowed in carry-on luggage as long as they comply with the TSA’s liquid rule. Larger aerosols are usually allowed in checked baggage, but they may be subject to your airline’s specific policies.
Some aerosols, however, especially those considered flammable or hazardous, are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage.
Aerosols in hand luggage
Common products that come in aerosol form include hairspray, deodorant, shaving cream, perfume, and certain types of sunscreen. When packing these aerosol products for your carry-on, the 3-1-1 liquids rule applies.

This means you can bring liquids, aerosols, and gels in containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or smaller. All these items must fit into a single, quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag. Keep in mind that you’re only allowed one of these bags per person.
It’s essential to note that even if a container is smaller than 3.4 ounces but doesn’t fit in the quart-sized bag, it won’t be allowed through security. Also, if the liquid is 100ml or less but is inside a container with a capacity of over 100ml, it still won’t be allowed.
Additionally, while most aerosols are permitted under the 3-1-1 rule, those considered flammable or hazardous are strictly prohibited.
Aerosols in checked baggage
Can you bring aerosols on a plane via checked baggage, you ask? The good news is, you have more flexibility when packing aerosols in your checked baggage compared to carry-on. Still, there are guidelines to keep in mind.
Most aerosols, including those considered safe for carry-on like hairspray and deodorant, can be packed in checked luggage. Just remember that there are quantity restrictions — the total amount of aerosols should not exceed 70 ounces or 2 kilograms. Also, individual containers should be no larger than 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces).

To prevent potential leaks and damage, ensure that aerosol containers are securely packed and protected within your luggage. Release devices such as buttons and nozzles must be protected by caps or other covering to prevent accidental release.
What aerosols are not allowed on planes?
Certain aerosols are prohibited on planes due to their flammable or hazardous nature. These include but are not limited to the following items:
- spray paint
- cooking spray
- WD-40 (a brand of penetrating oil that works as a lubricant, rust preventive, and moisture displacer)
- insect repellents or insecticides that are designed to be sprayed in the air or at the insect
- other non-toiletry aerosols

Tips for traveling with aerosols
While the above rules are pretty easy to understand, a few more tips and reminders won’t hurt.
First off, let’s talk packing. Whether you decide to bring aerosols in your hand luggage or checked baggage, make sure to pack appropriately. For checked luggage, prevent leaks by wrapping your aerosols in bubble wrap or clothing for extra protection.
