Kuala Lumpur, the most populous and popular city in Malaysia, is known for its iconic Petronas Twin Towers, glitzy malls, and delectable street food.
As Malaysia’s capital city and where the country’s main international airport is located, Kuala Lumpur is the gateway to Malaysia and most often the first city that tourists see when they arrive.
Despite this, Kuala Lumpur usually isn’t the first holiday destination you hear about in Malaysia. That honor often goes to Penang or one of the many islands in the country. This begs the question: Is Kuala Lumpur worth visiting?
I’ve visited Kuala Lumpur quite a few times and I honestly say “yes”! Kuala Lumpur isn’t just a stopover in Malaysia before your final destination. It has plenty to offer avid travelers too!
That’s not to say that everyone will love it though. First, let’s look at some of the reason why some travelers might not enjoy their time in Kuala Lumpur.

Why some travelers avoid Kuala Lumpur
There’s so much traffic!
The city that I grew up in, Hong Kong, is considered by many as one of the busiest cities in the world. However, when I first arrived in Kuala Lumpur, I was blown away by the sheer amount of traffic, particularly during rush hour.
The roads were filled to the brim with cars and motorbikes as locals commute back from work. The e-hailing ride that I was in literally inched towards my hotel and a ride that would have taken 10 minutes according to Google ended up taking almost 40!
According to the driver, this was completely normal for a day in Kuala Lumpur.
It is an extremely crowded city
Just as there are many cars in Kuala Lumpur, so too are there hordes of people. That’s understandable, considering that Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia, and hence where most Malaysians congregate in search of better career opportunities.
While the population density in Kuala Lumpur is slightly lower than that of Hong Kong, some travelers will find the city to be a little too crowded. Unfortunately, with there being so many people all the time, it’s not as easy to “leave the city” behind in Kuala Lumpur as in some other locations, although there are some places you can go for some peace and quiet.
In addition, as with other destinations with constant crowds, travelers visiting Kuala Lumpur will also need to be wary of pickpockets.
Kuala Lumpur can get a little bit expensive
I know, the irony of someone from Hong Kong saying that a city is expensive is not lost on me. In general, Malaysia is a relatively affordable country to visit. However, it is perhaps because this is the case that Kuala Lumpur feels just a little more costly.
For example, when I was in the city, I woke up and went to a cafe where I ordered an americano and a Western Breakfast (think sausages, eggs, beans, and toast). The meal cost me around 50 MYR (just a little over $12). When I was in Penang, I had the same meal and it only cost around 30 MYR (about $7).
According to my local friends, this is the norm when it comes to “KL prices” and it doesn’t only apply to food but also to accommodation prices as well. So yes, compared to other locations in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur can be a little more expensive.
Why is Kuala Lumpur worth visiting?
And now, I present to you, the top reasons why Kuala Lumpur is a destination that’s worth visiting!
1. Kuala Lumpur is a metropolis that combines old and new
When I first arrived in Kuala Lumpur, I’ll be honest: I thought I had somehow ended up back in Hong Kong. It wasn’t just the fact that many local Chinese Malaysians spoke fluent Cantonese, but because the very nuance of the city reminded me of home.
“A mixture of old and new” is a phrase that can describe many Malaysian cities, but for me, it perfectly encapsulates the city of Kuala Lumpur. On the one hand, you have futuristic skyscrapers like the Merdeka 118 Tower — the second tallest building in the world, glitzy malls and hotels, and innovative entertainment spaces and hangouts.
However, beyond the glitzy facade of the city, you’ll also find bustling traditional markets like Petaling Street, and beautifully preserved temples like the Thean Hou Buddhist Temple. Much like Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur is a city that straddles the line between modernity and history.
2. It is home to many of Malaysia’s best malls
I suppose this comes as no real surprise to anyone: Kuala Lumpur is where you will find some of the very best malls in Malaysia.
Whether it’s the brand-new Starhill Gallery, the always-crowded Pavillion Bukit Bintang, the classic Suria KLCC beneath the Petronas Twin Towers, the classic Mid Valley Megamall or more, Kuala Lumpur is a shopping mecca where you can find both quality local and luxurious international brands.
In fact, for shopaholics, the glitzy malls of Kuala Lumpur (as well as the many artisanal shops and traditional markets in the city) are enough of a reason to make Kuala Lumpur a city worth visiting!
3. There are plenty of breathtaking architectural wonders and national monuments
The more I explored Kuala Lumpur, the more I realized that the city is the epitome of modernity. While Kuala Lumpur is similar to Hong Kong in many aspects, I did realize that the architecture in the city is much more diverse and creative.
I’ve already mentioned the Merdeka 118 Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers, arguably the most iconic architectural marvel in the country. But beyond those two mega skyscrapers, you’ll find many national monuments and ingenious landmarks in Kuala Lumpur that double up as Insta-worthy photo spots.
Take, for example, the Saloma Link which connects KLCC to Kampung Baru. The tubular pedestrian bridge lights up in vibrant colors at night, making it one of the top spots for night photography. On the flip side, there’s also Merdeka Square and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, both locations that are filled with historical ambiance and significance.
4. Kuala Lumpur is home to many memorable attractions
Perhaps at this point, you might be thinking: glitzy malls and iconic landmarks with history are cool, but they’re not my cup of tea. What else is there that makes it worth visiting Kuala Lumpur?
Fret not, my friends. As I found out during my trip there, Kuala Lumpur has plenty of memorable attractions to offer that aren’t just pretty buildings, although some of them exist within said buildings!
Some of the most popular attractions in Kuala Lumpur include cultural must-sees like the aforementioned Thean Hou Temple and the beautiful Batu Caves, Aquaria KLCC, an immersive oceanarium located underneath the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the national zoo (Zoo Negara), various museums, vantage points (like the Sky Deck in the Kuala Lumpur Tower), indoor entertainment parks like SuperPark, and more!
Whatever you fancy, you will find no shortage of attractions and experiences in Kuala Lumpur!
5. The street food is to die for
You’re probably wondering why I didn’t list any popular food-hunting spots in the point above. That’s simply because food in Kuala Lumpur deserves a spot of its own!
Food in Malaysia is generally pretty good and while most foodies think of places like Penang and Ipoh, I dare venture to say that the food in Kuala Lumpur is equally delectable. I especially love the wide range of different street food in the city.
Jalan Alor, the famous food street near Bukit Bintang is my go-to foodie spot in Kuala Lumpur. Perhaps it’s because of the mainly Chinese-centric hawker food which reminded me of home, or perhaps it was the vibrant atmosphere, but visiting Jalan Alor for dinner or even supper is always a treat.
If you’re ever in Kuala Lumpur, make sure to stop by Jalan Alor for the famous Wong Ah Wah chicken wings and coconut ice cream!
6. There are also classy dining options that will blow you away
As much as I love the street food in Kuala Lumpur, my most memorable meal in the city was when my friend and I decided to indulge at a place called The Troika, located inside a tower that offers spectacular views of the Petronas Twin Towers and city skyline.
There, we found plenty of reservations-only sky dining spaces that served incredible food and memorable views. This basically brings me back to an earlier point where I said Kuala Lumpur was the perfect blend between modernity and tradition.
Classy dining spots like this are aplenty in Kuala Lumpur. In fact, in 2023, the city welcomed its first two Michelin-Starred restaurants: D.C. by Darren Chin and Dewakan.
7. Cafe hoppers will love the artisan cafes of Kuala Lumpur
The one thing I can safely say Kuala Lumpur is better at than my city is providing ambient cafes. For travelers who can’t resist hopping between hole-in-the-wall cafes that are unique in every way, Kuala Lumpur is a city that’s worth visiting.
Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind themed menu, swoon-worthy decorations that double up as Instagram-worthy backdrops, or a mix of both, cafes in Kuala Lumpur offer a temporary reprieve from the city life with a nice cuppa and delicious food.
8. The city is where you’ll find the best nightlife in Malaysia
If enjoying a cup of coffee in a relaxing setting is the perfect way to start the day, then Kuala Lumpur also offers the ideal way to end the night — a vibrant nightlife scene punctuated by trendy music, lively bars and clubs, and lovely night views to top it all off.
For the best clubbing in Malaysia, one should hit up the Bukit Bintang area and Changkat, where you’ll find not only the liveliest spots where both locals and tourists gather to party away, but also the best after-clubbing food in the world. Think comforting shawarmas, cheesy naans, and burgers.
Even if you’re not into parties or pub crawling, night time in Kuala Lumpur offers plenty of fun activities. For example, one of the evening experiences I liked was getting on the KL Hop-On Hop Off Bus. As the name suggests, it brings visitors to many of the city’s iconic locations on an open-top bus. While it operates in the daytime too, I prefer the night ride as you get to experience the whimsical lights of the city.
9. There is a thriving local arts and culture scene in Kuala Lumpur
Another way you can keep yourself entertained once the sun goes down in Kuala Lumpur is by attending a few shows, specifically local comedy or musical shows.
One of the reasons Kuala Lumpur is worth visiting, in my opinion, at least, is the thriving local arts scene. Open-mic comedy clubs, jazz bars, and even spontaneous street performances are common in the city and provide a gateway into understanding and falling in love with a different side of Malaysian culture.
In addition, Kuala Lumpur is also Malaysia’s global city when it comes to the arts. Most concerts by popular international artists are held here, as well as huge cultural events like Bon Odori and anime cosplay exhibitions!
10. You will find Malaysia’s best hotels in Kuala Lumpur
Much like the busy Mong Kok District back home, Kuala Lumpur has plenty of stunning hotels and lovely vacation rental homes to lull tourists into blissful relaxation.
Unsurprising, really, given that the city is where most international travelers first visit when they arrive in Malaysia. And, what impressed me was that the accommodation rate in Kuala Lumpur isn’t as expensive as other major cities in the region, like Seoul, Tokyo, and yes, Hong Kong. This applies even to certain famous hotel chains.
What’s more, many hotels in Kuala Lumpur offer tip-top service and meals to die for. I can certainly see why my friends like to go on staycations so often!
11. Natural oases can be found throughout the city
Having said all that, you might think that Kuala Lumpur is a glitzy concrete jungle and nothing more. That couldn’t be further from the truth!
Yes, Kuala Lumpur is a bustling metropolis in every sense of the word. But hidden amidst the busy highways and the gleaming skyscrapers are natural oases and gardens that whisk you away from city life. This was perhaps what surprised me the most when I first visited the city, that even in a modern city like Kuala Lumpur you can find verdant specks of green.
Two of the most prominent urban green spaces in Kuala Lumpur are the Perdana Lake Gardens and my personal favorite, the KL Eco Forest Park — a forest reserve located smack dab in the middle of the city. How cool is that?
12. It has the best public transportation in Malaysia
I know some Malaysians reading this will probably be laughing right now but I stand by what I said. Compared to the rest of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur has the most sophisticated public transportation system.
There are multiple trains, buses, and subways that not only allow travelers to easily get to the main locations in the city, but also connect Kuala Lumpur to the wider Selangor area, and even to the rest of Peninsular Malaysia!
While the efficiency is somewhat debatable, I found getting around Kuala Lumpur by public transport to be a breeze. Definitely more so than getting stuck in countless traffic jams!
Conclusion
For those of you still pondering the question “is Kuala Lumpur worth visiting”, hopefully the list above has nudged you ever so slightly to a resounding “yes”.
At this point though, I must confess that my experience of Kuala Lumpur is probably enhanced because of the fact that I’m from Hong Kong. The Chinese culture in the city is very much like that which I’ve experienced back home. Add to that the wonderful food and unique attractions, and I’m sure you can see why I like Kuala Lumpur so much.
Is it a perfect city? I wouldn’t say so, and I doubt any locals would either. That said, Kuala Lumpur certainly lives up to its status as Malaysia’s capital city. It represents both the traditional aspect of its people, as well as the country’s unending pursuit of modernization.
