As a Cincinnati native who spent many nights before turning 21 wondering what to do on summer and weekend nights, I’ve put together a range of night-owl activities to enjoy Cincinnati nightlife.

1. BLINK Cincinnati
If you’re in town for the annual BLINK experience, it’s a drop-everything-and-go-see kind of event. For four days a year, BLINK carries out the nation’s largest free public art event, illuminating the Cincinnati urban environment with laser light shows, projections, murals, and live entertainment.
2. Hop around the breweries
Cincinnati has built up an impressive microbrewery culture in the past decade, reviving the tradition of beer-brewing with all the modern twists. Hopping around the city’s craft breweries has become a favorite plan for exploring Cincinnati at night, whether with a brewery tour or on your own.
Some breweries that you don’t want to miss include Rhinegeist and Northern Row in Over-the-Rhine, West Side Brewing in Westwood, and Madtree in Oakley.
3. Dance the night away
There are some great clubs in downtown Cincinnati and other neighborhoods where you can dance until you drop. From gay bars like Birdcage and Alice to downtown clubs like Energy and Main Event, there’s a good array of options.
Beyond the nightclubs, a lot of bars have space to dance, like Tin Roof in the Banks, for example.
4. Eat some late-night chili
Among many things Cincinnati is famous for, Cincinnati is known for its chili. The chili is a must-try, but it hits differently after dark. Cincinnati chili is the answer to any night-time cravings and does a good bit to stop a hangover before it starts.
Chains like Skyline and Gold Star have locations that are open as late as 2 a.m., while Camp Washington Chili is open 24 hours except on Sundays.
5. Stargaze at the Observatory
Turn your gaze skyward at the Cincinnati Observatory. This hilltop observatory has charted and observed the stars for 180 years and offers regular viewings, historical tours, and other activities to take you out of this world in Cincinnati at night.
6. Catch a movie in a historic theater
Cincinnati has its fair share of historic movie theaters, some of which are still in operation screening anything from indie cult classics to blockbusters.
Two great options are Esquire Theatre among the brick buildings of the historic Gaslight District and Mariemont Theatre, nestled among the Tudor-style buildings of the village’s downtown.
7. Groove at the Blind Lemon
This hidden, live-music bar captured my imagination as a child.
Tucked down a narrow passageway almost too easy to miss is a cozy, lush patio and an underground tavern known as the Blind Lemon. It’s a great place for a summertime cocktail or hot chocolate around the fire pit on a winter afternoon, and to catch live music year-round.
8. Scoop up some ice cream
Cincinnati has some of the best ice cream and soft-serve in the United States. In the summertime, roadside soft-serve shops like the Creamy Whip and Zip Dip open their serving windows
Year-round you can try local favorites like the elegant Algamesis’ Bros or the Cincinnati staple of Graeter’s. I can’t recommend Graeter’s black raspberry chocolate chip enough.
9. Ice skate in Fountain Square
Whether you can twirl and spin or struggle to stay upright, ice skating in Fountain Square during the winter is never a bad plan. It’s also one of the best date night ideas in Cincinnati, where you and a special someone can glide over ice amid Cincy’s skyscrapers.
10. Descend into Over-the-Rhine’s depths
Ghost Baby is perhaps the Queen City’s most unique bar. Ghost Baby is located four stories under Over-the-Rhine’s streets, in tunnels once used to keep beer and other brewed concoctions cold.
The bar fancies itself a near-mythical place of eclectic live music, clandestine meetings, and haunted history. Stopping by for a craft cocktail or a performance is a great date night idea in Cincinnati.

11. Watch fireworks over the Ohio River
Thirteen of the dozens of home games played by the Cincinnati Reds in 2023 fall on Friday, meaning baseball fans can stick around after the games for Fireworks Fridays.

12. Enjoy a cold one at a hockey game
Another great (albeit rowdy) sports activity in Cincinnati at night is the $2 Beer Night at a Cincinnati Cyclones game. Fans can cheer on the minor-league ice hockey team while enjoying ice-cold beers on a budget at Heritage Bank Center downtown.
13. Grab a burger with a view
As the city of seven hills, many of Cincinnati’s neighborhoods look over the picturesque downtown. Of course, hillside burger joints and other restaurants come with privileged views, and grabbing one makes for a great thing to do in Cincinnati at night.
Head to Cityview Tavern in Mount Adams or the Incline Public House in Price Hill to enjoy a burger with views of the glimmering skyline.
14. Frighten yourself at a haunted house
When the autumn winds start blowing, Cincinnati nights get spooky.
Brave the rocking floors of USS Nightmare, a haunted riverboat in Northern Kentucky, or at the Dent Schoolhouse on the West Side. The Kings Island amusement park also hosts Halloween Haunt, a great seasonal thing to do at night in Cincinnati.
15. Stroll Smale Riverfront Park
Sometimes the best plans are the simplest. A nighttime stroll at Smale Riverfront Park is easy and accessible and shines a light on the thriving green spaces in Cincinnati. The park’s colorful fountains, creative installations, and cityscape views make it a must-see.
16. Support local artists at Essex Studios Artwalk
Essex Studios Artwalk has it all — I’ve snacked from local restaurants, seen intimate theatre performances, and browsed for artisan gifts.
This art studio hosts periodic events where artists gather to display their creativity through markets, performances, and showcases, complete with live music and catered food.
17. Booze up at a speakeasy
There’s no Prohibition that makes speakeasies necessary, but that doesn’t mean they’re not exciting.
Fortunately, Cincinnati nightlife is bolstered by speakeasies and hidden bars. Walnut Hills neighborhood has two prime speakeasies and hidden bars, the Video Archive and the Comfort Station, where you can get some (not) bootleg booze.
18. Chase sunsets from a park
I spent many a night as a teenager chasing sunsets from Cincinnati’s hilltop parks. From the pavilions of Ault and Mount Echo parks to the overlooks at Eden and Fairview parks, Cincinnati never has a shortage of places to watch the turning of day.
19. Sing your heart out at a concert
With state-of-the-art venues, Cincinnati attracts concert tours big and small. A summertime Cincinnati nightlife staple is a show at Riverbend Park, while big-name artists perform at Great American Ballpark and Paycor Stadium.
Smaller venues like Bogart’s bring in up-and-coming indie artists. Cincinnati also hosts some music festivals, like Bunbury and the Cincinnati Juneteenth Festival, which celebrate African American music and culture from Cincinnati and beyond.
20. Groove to live jazz
There are many places to listen to live jazz in Cincinnati, but nowhere beats Schwartz’s Point Jazz & Acoustic Club on Vine Street. The club was founded by Ed Moss, a local jazz legend who passed away in 2016, but the joint still carries on his legacy and fosters jazz culture in the Queen City.
21. View some Art After Dark
Once a month, the Cincinnati Art Museum opens its doors after the sun goes down for Art After Dark. The free event, which has a different theme every month, is one of the best things to do at night in Cincinnati.
Special exhibitions open with free admission alongside bars and local food catering, allowing you to mix some art culture into your Cincinnati nightlife.
22. Jam out at an Ault Park summer festival
From June to August one of Cincinnati’s most beautiful parks, Ault Park, comes alive with free-admission music festivals. These nights usually feature local bands and artists and foster a family-friendly way to enjoy a long, warm, summer night in Cincinnati.

23. Drink some authentic Kentucky bourbon
Let’s get something straight — while it is its own thing, Northern Kentucky is also Cincinnati. The cities of Newport, Covington, and Bellevue are inextricable from the history of the Queen City and have their fair share to contribute to Cincinnati nightlife.
Like, for example, a burgeoning bourbon scene. Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar is a great place to start your bourbon imbibing, but don’t miss New Riff Distillery or Revival Vintage Bottle Shop.
24. Walk in the footsteps of ghosts
Over-the-Rhine is one of the epicenters of Cincinnati nightlife, but it’s also a neighborhood of rich history — and ghost stories. The Buried Secrets Ghost Tour takes you around the historic neighborhood to learn the secrets of the dead and gone…or perhaps not so gone.
One of the most haunted buildings in Cincinnati, Music Hall, is in the center of the neighborhood. While I can’t confirm it was paranormal activity, I once witnessed some strange occurrences in Music Hall, so don’t be so quick to judge this ghost tour as mere superstition.
25. Kick back at an FC Cincinnati game
FC Cincinnati is the Queen City’s Major League Soccer team that, before making it to the big leagues, broke attendance record after attendance record. One thing Ohio is famous for is its excellent sports culture, and FC Cincinnati is the latest big shot in Ohio sports.
Now, the club has a brand-new stadium in the West End, and catching a game is an excellent thing to do in Cincinnati at night.
26. Support the performing arts
Between the Aronoff Center, Music Hall, Playhouse in the Park, and many other small performing arts venues, there’s an overwhelming number of performances to see in Cincinnati.
Pick one, from contemporary dance and ballet to symphony and Broadway productions, and support the performing arts companies of the Queen City.
